*
Paul,
called apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and our brother
Sosthenes,
*
To the gathering
of God which is in Corinth, having been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called holy
ones with all those calling on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, in every
place, both theirs and ours.
Paul
indicates that his “place” differs from that of the communities he visits.
*
Favor to
you and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ.
*
I give
thanks to my God always about you for of the favor of God having been given to
you in Christ Jesus,
Paul
distinguishes between “his” god and the god he speaks of to his communities.
* that in everything you were enriched in him
in all talk and all knowledge—
* even as the witnessing of Christ was
confirmed in you—
* so that you are not lacking, not in one
gift, awaiting the revelation of our
Lord Jesus Christ,
ος και
*
who will
confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
* faithful is God, through whom
you were called into the community of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
It would seem that Paul has obtained copies of the gospel narratives.
It would seem that Paul has obtained copies of the gospel narratives.
*
I urge
to you, brothers through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all say
the same thing, and that there is no division among you, but that you be knit
togther in the same mind and the same judgment.
*
For it was
shown to me about you, my brothers, by those of Chloe, that there are quarrels
among you.
* I say
this, that each one of you says, “I am Paul’s,” or
“I am Apollos’,” or “I am Cephas’” or “I am Christ’s.”
* Has Christ been
divided? Was Paul not crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of
Paul?
*
I thank
God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,
ινα μη τις
* So that no one should
say into my name you were baptized.
* I baptized
the house of Stephanas. The rest I do not know if I baptized any other
Paul
seems to have trouble remembering who of the community he baptized.
ου γαρ
* For Christ did
not send me to baptize but to bring the good news, and not in wisdom of word, in
order that the cross of Christ be emptied of power.
*
The word
of the cross, to those who are perishing, is foolishness, but to those who are
being saved, to us, it is the power of God.
This
would seem to contradict most of the theology that says the power of the word
is life.
* It has been written,
* “I will
destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the intelligence of of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
and the intelligence of of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
Paul
refers to Obadiah 1: “In that day, declares the Lord, “will I not destroy the
wise men of Edom, whose of understanding in the mountains of Esau/” It is interesting to note that the verse
refers to non-Judeans.
*
Where is
the wise? Where the scribe? Where the debater of this age? Has not God made
foolish the wisdom of the world?
We
know from various accounts that Hadrian’s reprisals against the Judeans
included killing many of the leaders of the Sanhedrin. Among those to die was Rabbi Akiva, who was
considered one of the great scholars and teachers of his time and his people.
Since, in the
wisdom of God, the world did not know through the wisdom of God, God was pleased, through the foolishness of the
urging, to save those who believe.
According to
Paul, God has wisdom; the world lacks God’s wisdom (or because God was wise,
God did hot provide God’s wisdom to the world—the phrase could be read that
way, too).
* Judeans ask for a sign and Greeks seek wisdom,
* We proclaim
Christ being crucified, to Judeans a stumbling block, and to nations,
foolishness,
Paul uses the
greek word εθνος, which, in Hebrew is “goy,”
“nation.”
* To those who are
called, Judeans and Greeks, Christ, the
power of God and the wisdom of God.
* Because the
foolishness of God is wiser than humans, and the weakness of God is stronger
than humans.
*
You see
your calling, brothers: that not many of you are wise according flesh, not many
are powerful, not many are well-born.
*
But the foolish things of the world God chose in order that he might put the wise to shame; and the weak things of the world God chose in
order that he might put the srrong shame;
Paul
tells his community that they were chosen to shame the wise and the strong.
* The low-born
of the world and the despised God chose, and things that are not, in order to
annul things that are,
This
has the sound of great grief at
witnessing the destruction of a people and a world, of knowing people
were slaughtered, of wanting to see the destroyers destroyed.
* so that no flesh
might boast in the before God.
*
From of
him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made wisdom to us from God, righteousness
and holiness and redemption,
* In order
that, as it was written, “the one who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”
Paul
refers to Isa 45:25: All of the
descendants of Israel will be justified and will glory in the Lord.”
