Romans chapters 10-13: Still doesn't prohibit homosexuality. New vocab, new grammar, scary new political philosophy


Αδελφοι η μεν ευδοκια της εμης καρδιας και η δεησις προς τον θεον υπερ αυτων εις σωτηεριαν

* Brothers, the good pleasure of my heart and supplication before God on their behalf is for salvation.

Μαρτυρω γαρ αυτοις οτι ζηλον θεου εχουσιν αλλ ου κατ επιγνωσιν

*  I bear witness to them that they have jealousy for God, but not according to knowledge.

αγνοουντες γαρ την του θεου δικαιοσυνην και την ιδιαν δικιαοσυνην ζητουντες στησαι τη δικαιοσυνη του θεου ουχ υπεταγησαν

* Being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

τελος γαρ νομου Χριστος εις δικαιοσυνην παντι τω πιστευοντι

* For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

μωυσης γαρ γραφει οτι την διακιοσυνην την εκ του νομου οτι ο ποιησας αυτα ανθρωπος ζησεται εν αυτοι

* Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, the man having practiced will live by them.

Moses did not write anything that we know of.  This was not a statement made by a Pharisee.

η δε εκ πιστεως δικαιοσυνη ουτως λεγει Μη ειπης εν τη καρδια σου τις αναβησεται εις τον ουρανον τουτ εστιν Χριστον καταγαγειν

* But the righteousness of faith speaks thus, “You might not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend to heaven?’” that is, to bring Christ down.

η τις καταβησεται εις την αβυσσον τουτ εστιν Χριστον εκ νεκρων αναγαγειν

* Or “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” that is, to bring Christ up from the corpses.

Αλλα τι λετει εγγυς σου το ρημα εστιν εν τω στοματι σου και εν τη καρδια σου τουτ εστιν το ργμα της πιστεως ο κηρυσσεν

* But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” that is, the word of faith which we proclaim;

The word used for “word” is ρημα not λογος.  “Paul” has acquired new vocabulary.

οτι εαν ομολογησης το ρημα εν τω στοματι σου κυριον Ηισουν και πιστευσης  εν τη καρδια σου οτι ο θεος αυτον ηγειρεν εκ νεκρων σωθηση

* If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the corpses, you will be saved.

ομολογησης is another new word.

Καρδια γαρ πιστευεται εις δικαιοσυνην στοματι δε ομολογειται εις σωτηριαν

 * In the heart is belief and righteousness, in the mouth is confession to salvation.

Λεγει γαρ η γραφη πας ο πιστευων επ αυτω ου καταισχυνθησεται

* The writing says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be ashamed.”

There is no such saying in the Judean canon.

Ου γαρ εστιν διαστολη Ιουδαιου τε και Ελληνος ο γαρ αυτος κυριος παντων πλοθτων εις παντας τους επικαλουμενους αυτον

 * There is no difference between Judean and Greek; the same Lord is rich toward all who call upon him.

πας γαρ ος αν πιεκαλεσηται το ονομα κυριου σωθησεται

* Each who might call on the name of the Lord will be saved.

This is a not-quite-accurate citation from Joel 2”32:  “and everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;”

πως ουν επικαλεσωνται εις ον ουκ επιστευσαν πως δε πιστευσωσιν ου ουκ ηκουσαν πως δε ακουσωσιν χωρις

* How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him of whom they have never heard? How will they hear without someone proclaiming?

πως δε κηρυξωσιν εαν μη αποσταλωσιν καθως γεγραπται ως ωραιοι οι  ποδες των  ευαγγενλζομενων αγαθα

·      How will they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those bringing good news well!”

This is an inaccurate citation of Isa 52:7: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns.”  Or an inaccurate citation of Nahum 1:15:  “Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.”

αλλ ου παντες υπηκουσαν τω ευαγγελιω Ησαιας γαρ λεγει Κυριε τις επιστευσεν τη ακοη ημων

* But not all have obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who believed our report?”

An inaccurate citation of Isa 53:1:  Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”

αρα η πιστις εξ ακοης η δε ακοη δια πρματος Χριστου

* So faith is by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Αλλα λεγω μη ουκ μενουνγε εις πασαν την γην εξηλθεν ο φθογγος αυτων και εις τα περατα της οικουμενης τα ρηματα αυτων

* But I ask, did they not hear? Yes, rather,
“Into all the earth their voice went out
and to the ends of the world their words.”

Psalms 19:4

Αλλα λεγ Αλλα λεγω μη Ισραηλ ουκ εγνω πρωτος Μωυσης λεγει εγω παραζηλωσω υμας επ ουκ εθνει επ εθνει ασθνετω παροργιω υμας

* But I ask, did Israel not know? First Moses says,
“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

The quote is inaccurate and taken out of context from Moses’ song.  Deut 32: 21:  They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.”

Ησαιας δε αποτολμα και λεγει ευρεθην τοις εμε μη ζητουσιν εμφανης εγενομην τοις εμε μη επερωτωσιν

*  Isaiah is bold and says,
“I was found by those not seeking me;
I became revealed to those not inquiring after.”

An inaccurate citation of Isa 65:1:  I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.”

προς δε τον Ισραηλ λεγει ολην την ημεραν εξεπετασα τας χειρας μου προς λαον απειθουντα και αντιλεγοντα

* About Israel he says, “All day I stretched out my hands to people disobeying and contradicting.”

An inaccurate citation of Isa 65:2:  I spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices;”

Λεγω ουν μη απωσατο ο θεος τον λαον αυτου μη γενοιτο και γαρ εγω ισραηλιτης  ειμι εκ σπερματος Αβρααμ φθλης Βανιαμιν 

* I say did God thrust his people away? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

In Philippians, Paul was “from the people of Israel,” a “Hebrew” and a Pharisee.  Israelite was not a word he used, not did he identify himself as “descendant of Abraham.”  It is because that this “Paul” uses the Abraham narrative to argue for the letigimate adoption of non-Judeans into the “promise.”  By emphasizing descent from Abraham, he is telling his audience that since he is a legitimate heir, he has the authority to extend the adoption to them.  

Ουχ  απωσατο ο θεος τον λαον αυτου ον προεγων μηουκ οιδατε εν Ηλια τι λεγει η γραφη ως εντυγχανει τω θεω κατα του Ισραηλ

* God did not thrust away his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the writing says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel?

Κυριε τους προφητας σου απεκτειναν τα θυσιαστηρια σου κατεσκαψαν καγω θπελειφθην μονος και ζητουσιν την ψυχην μου

* “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”

An inaccurate citation of 1 Kings 19:14:  I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Αλλα τι λεγει αυτω ο μρηματισμος Κατελιπον εμαυτω επτακισχιλιους ανδρας οιτινες ουκ εκαμψαν γονυ τη βααλ

* But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

An inaccurate citation of 1 Kings 1918:  “Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

ουτως ουν και εν τω νυν καιρω λειμμα κατ εκλογην χαριτος γεγονεν

* Thus at the present time, a remnant, according to election.

Ει δε χαριτι ουκετι εξ εργων επει η χαρις ουκετι γινεται χαρις ει δε εξ εργων ουκετι εστιν χαρις επει εργον ουκετι εστιν εργον

* If by favor, it is no longer of works; otherwise favor no longer becomes favor.

Το ουν ο επιζγτει Ισραηλ τουτο ουκ επετυχεν η δε εκλογη επετυχεν οι δε λοιποι επωρωθησαν 

* What then?  What does Israel seek that it did not obtain? The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,

καθως γεγραπται εδωκεν αυτοις ο θεος πνευμα κατανυξεως οφθαλμους του μη βλεπειν και ωτα του μη ακουειν εως της σημερον ημερας

* As it has been written,
“God gave them a spirit of slumber,
eyes not to see
and ears not to hear,
unto the day today.”

This is an inaccurate conflation from several sources.  Deut 29:4:  But to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.” Isa 6:9:  “Go, and say to this people: "'Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.”  Isa 29:10: “For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers)” Jer  5:21:  “Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but see not, who have ears, but hear not.”  Eze 12:2: “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house.”

Και δαυιδ λεγει γενηθητω η τραπεζα αυτων εις παγιδα και εις θηραν και εις σκανδαλον και εις αναταποδομα αυτοις

*  David says,
“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them;

An inaccurate citation of Psalm 69:22: “Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.

σκοτισθητωσαν οιτ οφθαλμοι αυτων του μη βλεπειν και τον νωτον αυτων δια παντος συνκαμψον

* Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and bend their backs forever.”

An inaccurate citation of Psalm 69:23:  Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.”

Λεγω ουν μη επταισαν ινα πεσωσιν μη γενοιτο τω αυτων παραπτωματι η σωτηρια τοις εθνεσιν εις το παραζηλωσαι αυτους

*  I say, did they stumble in order that they might fall? Never may it be! Butd in their offense salvation to the nations, to provoke them to jealousy.

Ει δε το παραπτωμα αυτων πλουτος κασμου  και το ηττημα αυτων πλουτος εθνων ποσω μαλλον το πληρωμα αυτων

* If their trespass [is] riches for the world, and if their failure [is] riches for the nations, how much more their fulfillment!

Υμιν δε λεγω τοις ευνεσιν εφ οσον μεν ουν ειμι εγω εθνων αποστολος την δισκονιαν μου δοξαζω

*  I speak to you, nations, as I am one sent out to the nations, I glorify my ministry

ει πως παραζηλωσο μου την σαρκα και σωσω τινας εξ αυτων

 * If I will provoke my flesh to jealousy, and thus save some of them.

Ει γαρ η αποβολη αυτων καταλλαγη κοσμου τις η προσλημψις ει μη ζωη εκ νεκρων

* If their casting away means the reconciliation of the world, what [is] the reception if not life from the corpses?

Ει δε η απαρχη αγια και το φυραμα και ει η ριζα αγια και οι κλαδοι

* If the firstfruit [is] holy, so the lump, and if the root [is] holy, so the branches.

Ει δε τινες των κλαδων εξεκλασθησαν συ δε αγριελαιος ων ενεκεντρισθης εν αυτοις και συνκοινωνος της ριζης της ποιτητος της ελαιας εγενου

*  If some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them and a became fellow-partaker of root of the fatness of the olive tree,

μη καταυχω των κλαδων ει δε κατακαυχασαι ου συ την ριζαν βασταζεις αλλα η ριζα σε

 * Boast not be against the branches. If you boast against them, you do not support the root, the root supports you.

ερεις ουν εξεκλασθησαν κλαδοι ινα εγω ενκεντρισθω

* Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”

καλως τη απιστια εξεκλασθησαν συ δε τη πιστει εστηκας μη υψηλα φρονει αλλα φοβου

* Well. They were broken off by unbelief, but you stand in faith. So do not [be] high minded, but fear.

Ει γαρ ο θεος των κατα φυσιν κλαδων ουκ εφεισατο μη πως ουδε σου φεισεται

* If God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you.

Ιδε ουν χρηστοτητα και αποτομιαν θεου επι μεν τους πεσοντας αποτομια επι δε σε χρηστοτης θεου εαν επιμενης τη κρηστοτητι επι και συ εκκοπηση

* Behold the kindness and the severity of God: severity on those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, if you continue in kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

Κακεινοι δε εαν επιμενωσιν τη απιστια ενκεντρισθησονται δυνατος γαρ εστιν θεος παλιν ενκεντρισαι αυτους

*  And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to to graft them in again.

Ει γαρ συ εκ της κατα φυσιν εξεκοπης αγριελαιου και παρα φυσιν ενεκεντρισθης εις καλλειλαιον ποσω μαλλον ουτοι οι κατα φυσιν ενκεντρισθησονται τη ιδια ελαια

* For if you, according to nature, were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature, grafted  into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

And here we see the “contrary to nature” that appeared earlier, regarding adoption and progeny.  It has nothing at all to do with homosexuality.

Ου γαρ θελω υμας αγνοιειν αδελφοι το μυστηριον τουτο ινα μη ητε παρ εαυτοις φρονιμοι οτι πωρωσις απο μερους τω Ισραηλ γεγονεν αχρις ου το πλυρωμα των εθνων εισελθη

*  I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that you might be wise to this mystery.  a partial hardness has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the nations has come in.

και ουτως πας ισραηλ σωθησεται καθως γεγραπται Ηξει εκ Σιων ο ρυομενος αποστρεψει ασεβειας απο Ιακωβ

* And so all Israel will be saved, as it has been written,
“The Deliverer will come from Zion,
he will remove ungodliness from Jacob”;
An inaccurate citation from Isa 59:20:  And a Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression," declares the Lord.”

και αυτη αυτοις η παρ εμου διαθηκη οταν αφελωμαι τας αμαρτιας αυτων

* “And this will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”

An inaccurate citation from Isa 59:21:  And as for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring," says the LORD, "from this time forth and forevermore.”

Κατα μεν το ευαγγελιον εχθροι δι υμας κατα δε την εκλογην αγαπητοι δια τους πατερας

* As regards the good news, they are enemies through you. But as regards election, they are beloved through their forefathers.

Should anyone want to know when and where anti-Semitism began in the Church…

Αμεταμελητα γαρ τα χαρισματα και η κλησις του θεου

* The God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable.

Ωσπερ γαρ υμεις ποτε ηπειθησατε τω θεω νυν δε ηλεηθητε τη τουτων  απειθεια

* Just as you were once disobedient to God but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience,

ουτως και ουτοι νυν ξπειθησαν τω υμετερω ελεει ινα και αυτοι νυν ελεηθωσιν

* So too they have now been disobedient to your mercy, in order that they now also might have mercy shown.

Συνεκλεισεν γαρ ο θεος τους παντας εις απειτειαν τους παντας ελεηση

*  God has bound up together all in disobedience, that he might show mercy to all.

Ω βαθος πλουτου και σοφιας και γνωσεως θεου ως ανεξεραυνητα τα κριματα αυτου και ανειχνιαστοι αι οδοι αυτου

* Oh depth of riches both of wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how untraceable his ways!

This sounds like a quote.  It is not.

τις γαρ εγνω νουν κυριου η τις συμβουλος αυτου εγενετο

* “For who knew the mind of the Lord,
or who became his counselor?”

This sounds like a quote from the Judean canon.  It is not.  It does appear, in different from, in 1 Cor 2:18.  “Paul” cites “Paul” as if he were part of the Judean canon.

η τις προεδωκεν αυτω και ανταποδοθησεται αυτω

* “Or who first gave him
and it will be recompensed to him?”

An inaccurate quote from Job 41:11:  Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.”

οιτ εξ αυτου και δε αυτου και εις αυτον τα παντα αυτω η δοξα εις τους αιωνας αμην

* From him and through him and in him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

This sounds like the conclusion of a letter.

Παρακαλω ουν υμας αδελφοι δια των οικτιρμων του θεου παραστησαι τα σωματα υμων θυσιαν ζωσαν αγιαν τω θεω ευαρεστον την λογικην λατρειαν υμων

* Therefore I urge you, brothers, by God’s compassions, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your divinely reasonable service.

Και μη σθσχηματιζεσθε τω αιωνι τουτω αλλα μεταμορφουσθε τη ανακαινωσει του νοος εις το δοκιμαζειν υμας τι το θλημα του θεου το αγαθον και ευαρεστον και τελειον

* Do not fashion yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, for to prove you what is the will of God, what is good and well-pleasing and perfect 

λεγω γαρ δια της χαριτος της δοθεισησ μοι παντι τω οντι εν υμιν μη υπερφρονειν παρ ο δει φρονειν αλλα φρονειν εις το σοφρονειν σκαστ ως ο θεος εμερισεν μετρον  πιστεως

* I say through the favor having been given to me to everyone among you not to be high-minded than is necessary to be minded, but to be minded so as to be sober-minded, god divided to each a measure of faith.

Καθαπερ γαρ εν ενι σωματι πολλα μελη εχομεν τα δε μελη παντα ου την αυτην εχει πραξιν

* Even as as in one body [are] members and the members do not all have the same function,

ουτως οι πολλοι εν σωμα εσμεν εν Χιρστω το δε καθ εις αλληλων μελη

* So we are many in one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

This refers to 1 Cor.

εχοντες δε χαρισματα κατα την χαριν την δοθεισαν ημιν διαφορα ειτε προφητειαν κατα την αναλογιαν της πιστεως

* Different gifts, having been given to us according to favor, if prophecy, according to the proportion of faith;

ειτε διακονιαν εν τη διακονια ειτε ο διδασκων εν τη διδασκαλια

* Or one serving, in the service; one teaching, in the teaching;

ειτε ο παρακαλων εν τη παρακλησει ο μεταδιδους εν απλοτητι ο προισταμενος εν σπουδη οελεων εν ιλαροτητι

*  one urging, in his urgings; one  contributing, in simplicity; one leading, with earnestness; one showing mercy, with cheerfulness.

This also refers to 1 Cor

Η αγαπη ανυποκριτος απρστυγουντες το προνηρον καλλωμενοι τω αγαθω

* Let love be sincere. Abhorring evil; holding to good.

Also referring to 1 Cor.

Τη φιλαδελφια εις αλληλους φιλοστρογοι τη τιμη αλληλους προηγουμενοι

 * In brotherly love toward one another [show] kind affection. Go before one another in [giving] honor

τη σπουδη μη οκνηροι τω πνευματι ζεοντες τω κυριω δοθλευοντες

* In earnestness do not be lazy, be lively in spirit, slaving for the Lord.

Τη ειπικι χαιροντες τη θλιψει υπομενοντες τη προσυχη προσκαρτερουντες

 * In hope rejoicing, in tribulation being patient, in prayer being constant.

ταις χρειαις των αγιων κοινωνουντες την φιλοξενιαν διωκοντες

* Sharing the needs of the holy ones and practicing hospitality.

Ευλογειτε τους διωκοντας υμας ευλογειτε και μη καταρασθε

* Bless those persecuting; bless and do not curse.

Χαιρειν μετα χαιροντων κλαιειν μετα κλαιντων

 * Rejoice with the rejoicing, weep the weeping.

Το αυτο εις αλληλους φρονουντες μη τα υψηλα φρονουντες αλλα τοις πατεινοις
 συναπαγρμενοι μη γινεσθε φρονιμοι παρ εαυτοις

* Minding the same thing toward one another. Not being high-minded, but going along with the lowly. Not to be wise in yourselves.

Μηδενι κακον αντι κακου αποδιδοντες προνοουμενοι καλα ενωπιον παντων ανθρωπων

 * Repay no one evil for evil, but providing right before all.

Ει δυνατον το εξ υμων μετα παντων ανθρωπων ειρηνευοντες

 * If possible, out of you, being at peace among all men.

Μη εαυτους εκδικουντες αγαπγτοι αλλα δοτε τοπον τη οργη γεγραπται γαρ εμοι εκδικησις εγω ανταποδωσω λεγει κυριος

* Not avenging yourselves, beloved, but give place to wrath, for it has been written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

A not-exact quote from Deut 32:35:  Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.”

Αλλα εαν πεινα ο εχυρος σου ψωμιζε αυτον εαν διψα πιτιζε αυτον τουτο γαρ πιων ανθρακας πυρος σωρευσεις επι την κεφαλην αυτου

* But, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.

A not-exact quote of Psalm 25:21:  If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,”

Μη νικω υπο του κακου αλλα νικα εν τω αγαθω το κακον

* Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Πασα ψυχη εξουσιαις υπερεχουσαις υποτασσεσθω ου γαρ εστιν εξουσια ει μη υπο θεου αι δε ουσαι υπο θεου τεταγμεναι εισιν

* Let every soul be subject to authorities above him. For there is no authority if not by God, and those that are have been instituted by God.

New vocabulary:  “soul.”  Previously, we have seen “man” or just the participle.  New theory:  God created authority (conflicting with Judean canon, in which the people asked God for a king.)

Ωστε ο αντιτασσομενος τη εξουσια τη του εου δισταγη ανθεστηκεν οι δε αντθεστηκοτες εαυτοις κριμα λημχονται 

*          The one setting himself against authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will receive judgment.

Here we see the church setting up its own system for regulating members.

Οι γαρ αρχοντες ουκ εισιν φοβος τω αγαθω εργω αλλα τω κακω θελεις δε μη φοβεισθαι την εξουσιαν το αγαθον ποιει και εξεις επαινον εξ αυτης

* For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you desire not to be afraid of authority? Practice good, and you will have praise from him.

θεου γαρ δικονος εστιν σοι εις το αγαθον εαν δε το κακον ποιης φοβου ου γαρ εικη την μαχαιραν φορει θεου γαρ διακονος εστιν εκδικος εις οργην τω το κακον πρασσοντι

* For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you practice evil, of fear, for he does not wear the sword in vain. He is the servant of God, an avenger in wrath to him that does evil.

New vocabulary:  διακονος instead of δουλος.  New philosophy:  rulers get to punish people on God’s behalf.

Διο αναγκη υποτασσεσθαι ου μονον δια την οργην αλλα και δια την σθνειδησιν

 * Therefore it is necessary to be subject, not on account of the wrath but also on account of conscience.

Δια τουτο γαρ και φορους τελειτε λειτουργοι γαρ θεου εισιν εις αυτο τουτο προσκαρτερουντες

* Through this you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, attending continually to this very thing.

This is one way to make sure the community will come up with money for “Temple tax” since the Temple has not only been destroyed, but the rebuilt temple has been dedicated to a different god.  This way, not only does "Paul" get to keep the money, but the Romans are kept happy.

Αποδοτε πασιν τας οφειλας τω τον φορον τον φορον τω το τελος το τελος τω τον φοβον τον φοβον τω την τιμην την τιμην

* Give to all their dues: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Μηδενι μηδεν οφειλετε ει μη το αλληλους αγαπαν ο γαρ αγαπων τον ετερον νομον πεπληρωκεν 

* Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

Το γαρ ου μοιχευσεις ου φονευσεις ου κλεχεις ουκ επιθυμησεις και ει τις ετερα εντολη εν τω λογω τουτω ανακεφαλαιουται εν τω αγαπησεις τον πλησιον σου ως σεαυτον

* The commands, “You will not commit adultery, You will not murder, You will not steal, You will not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You will love your neighbor as yourself.”

Lev 19:18:  You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

Η αγαπη τω πλησιον κακον ουκ εργαζεται πληρωμα ουν νομου η αγαπη

* Love does not work evil to a neighbor; therefore love is fulfillment of the law.

Και τουτο ειδοτες τον καιρον οτι ορα ηδη υμας εξ υπνου εγερθηναι νυν γαρ εγγυτερον ημων η σωτηρια η οτε επιστευσαμεν

* Besides this, knowing the time, that the hour [is] already for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

Η νυξ προεκοψεν η δε ημερα εγγικεν αποθωμεθα ουν τα εργα του σκοτους ενδυσωμεθα δε τα οπλα του φωτος

 * The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. We should cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

ως εν ημερα ευσχημονως περιπατησωμεν μη κωμοις και μεθαις μη κοιταις και ασελγειαις μη επιδι και ζηλω

* We should walk properly as in the day, not in reveling and drinking, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

New vocabulary: κοιταις instead of  πορνεια.

Αλλα ενδυσασθε τον κυριον Ιησουν Χριστον και της σαρκος προνοιαν μη ποιεισθε εις επιθυμιας

 * But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take foresight of the flesh, for desire.
